Law & Disorder | The Case of Matthew Shepard
On October 7, 1998, 21-year-old University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was the victim of one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes to occur in the United States. In the years since his murder, his story has sparked conversation about hate crime legislation in the United States and led to the passage of the first federal hate crime law to include crimes instigated by an individual's perceived gender or gender identity. This episode of Law and Disorder examines the case – which comes up on its 25th anniversary later this year – and highlights the legacy that Matthew’s short life left behind.
